The Pennsylvania State Police issued a community awareness bulletin warning the general public of a fraudulent E-mail claiming to originate from the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles. The subject line of the E-mail indicates “Action Required – Fine for Traffic Violations.”
The body of the E-mail states that “a vehicle registered to you was captured running a red light” along with a violation date, ticket number, and a specified fine amount. There are also various links to click on to view photos, pay the fine, or for more information. These links redirect the user to other Web sites not affiliated with PennDOT.
There are additional signs that indicate this is a phishing scam, including poor spelling or grammar within the message. The message not only has “violation” spelled incorrectly, but also lists two different violation codes. Citations or traffic tickets issued in Pennsylvania are not paid directly to PennDOT.
If you receive one of these E-mails, please do not click on any of the links. Visit PennDOT’s Web site at www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/misc/03-2015-CAB-Phishing-Email-Alert.pdf for information and recommendations on how to handle these fraudulent E-mails.
