Ebert G. Beeman, notary and councilman-elect for Erie County’s 6th District, was arrested on Dec. 17 on charges of driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He will receive the criminal and traffic charges by summons.
This latest brush with the law marks the fifth time he has been arrested for driving with a suspended license.
According to the Erie Times News, Beeman has given various explanations for why he does not carry a valid driver’s license, including his belief that the state has no right to require him to provide his Siocial Security number. He has also said that his license became invalid when he mistakenly provided the wrong Social Security number to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Beeman also owes the IRS more than $2 million in unpaid federal income taxes.
The owner of Libertarian Notary, Beeman was elected to county council in November despite being denounced by local Republicans after they learned he was a Libertarian with radical views of government. Beeman had sought the Republican nomination for appearance sake only.
