If you are thinking about heading north of the border for a little fishing or south of the border for some rest and relaxation, well, the rules have changed. As of June 1, travelers headed to Bermuda, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean need a passport or a passport card to travel to these destinations by land or sea.
The Western Hemisphere Initiative took effect in June. Air travelers to these countries have needed passports or passport cards since January 2007.
The law was intended to go into effect for all types of travel to Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico in 2007, but the deadline for land and sea travel was extended becuase of an unprecedented demand for passports.
