Quitting Your Job? Take Your Notarial Register With You

If you are leaving your job, don’t forget to take your notarial register with you.

Although your employer may have purchased your seal and register for you, the commission is in your name and therefore, the notarial equipment belongs to you. You may, however, leave a photocopy of your register with your employer, if asked.

If you resign as a notary, are disqualified or decide not to reapply when your commission expires, you must turn in all your registers to the county recorder of deeds where you took your oath of office within 30 days. If you are suspended by the Secretary of the Commonwealth for violation of the Notary Public Law, you must turn in your registers immediately.

You should also provide instructions to your heirs or legal representative to deliver your registers to the recorder’s office within 30 days of your death.
